Surfing: Its not Montañita, but there are decent waves and you can have a lot of fun surfing and especially boogie boarding here. It is also a good spot for skim board.

Arguably it is better for surfing beginners, because the beach entry is long and shallow, so you can stand in the water while getting instruction, which is less tiring, and catch a small wave without needing to paddle vary far. There are several people on the beach offering surfing lessons.

Spa Treatments: For some upmarket relaxation check out the Samai Lodge Holistic Center: Shamanic healing, workshops, spa treatments, jacuzzi etc.

Great Views: Several of the more expensive hostals and private rentals in the Olón hills, have fabulous panoramic views of the ocean. Ironically, however one of the best views, is right at the beach at an inexpensive hostal – The Sea Garden House, which is the only three storey structure on the beach, and has wide open views of the beach, the ocean and the cliffs to the south.

Horseback Riding: There are several stables in the area, from which you can do trecks along the beach, and on hiking trails to two waterfalls (Cascasas de Dos Mangas and Cascasas de Alex) which are approximately 8-10 km from Olón beach.

Bird Watching: This area is full of marine and fresh water birds, and there are several small rivers and lakes around. Bring binoculars. Especially if you rent a house in the hills, you wont be disappointed. You’ll encounter a wide variety of birds without much effort. Even on the beach, where humming birds are commonplace. There are over 400 species of birds living in the jungle in this area.

Neighborhoods and Communities in Olón

Apartments and Condos: These are not very popular here, most of the housing is low-rise, only one or two storeys.

Independent Homes: The nicest areas in Olón are in the hills across the Ruta Del Sol from the downtown area, and along the beach to the south of the Malecón. The beachfront homes are set back far from the water, and have large yards.

Gated Communities: An upcoming development is the gated community of Valle de Olón which is about 1 km north of downtown Olón. It has sold about 30% of the houses, and has both empty lots and several different models available. When this project is completed, there will be communal pool, sports and game areas, lakes, hiking trails, parks and more. Some of these exist already.
