|If you want to avoid the hippy scene and partying in Montañita, try Olón just 5 mins drive north.
Olón has a very broad and long sandy beach which also has good surf conditions with both left and right beach breaks.
You can stay on the beach all day. The central part of the beach has kiosks and restaurants with excellent shade.
Olón has a short Malecón which has recently been refurbished with a nice red-brick road. The Malecón is lined with lots of restaurants serving a good variety of menus. There are public toilets provided at each end of the Malecón. It is well organized, the beach is very clean, and there are life guards during high season and some weekends.
In high season, parking is in short supply, so its advisable to come early or park a few streets back from the beach. Don’t even bother going in too close, or you’ll get stuck behind a big bus that’s unloading passengers, and completely blocking the road.
The beach town of Olón features lots of attractive beach homes available for rent, some are in the hills, some in gated communities on the beach, and many are individual homes along the beach. There are quite a lot of foreigners from all over the world living in Olón.
If you are staying in Olón for any amount of time, you’ll quickly discover there is not much in the way of shopping, not even a decent supermarket, so you will need to go to Montañita for most supplies.
Due to the beauty of this beach and the lush tropical surroundings of Olón, vacation rentals and real estate prices are higher than most other coastal areas, but still very affordable. A room for one or two people at a hostal on the beach is $35 night. There are 3 or 4 hostels right on the beach.
The peace and tranquility is only broken by crashing waves and the bird song from a wide variety of bird species including humming birds which are abundant in the area. On the beach you sometimes find iguanas and may occasionally spot wild horses. Tropical jungle extends down to the beach, and offers several hiking trails leading to two pretty waterfalls.

Arguably it is better for surfing beginners, because the beach entry is long and shallow, so you can stand in the water while getting instruction, which is less tiring, and catch a small wave without needing to paddle vary far. There are several people on the beach offering surfing lessons.
Spa Treatments: For some upmarket relaxation check out the Samai Lodge Holistic Center: Shamanic healing, workshops, spa treatments, jacuzzi etc.
Great Views: Several of the more expensive hostals and private rentals in the Olón hills, have fabulous panoramic views of the ocean. Ironically, however one of the best views, is right at the beach at an inexpensive hostal – The Sea Garden House, which is the only three storey structure on the beach, and has wide open views of the beach, the ocean and the cliffs to the south.
Horseback Riding: There are several stables in the area, from which you can do trecks along the beach, and on hiking trails to two waterfalls (Cascasas de Dos Mangas and Cascasas de Alex) which are approximately 8-10 km from Olón beach.
Bird Watching: This area is full of marine and fresh water birds, and there are several small rivers and lakes around. Bring binoculars. Especially if you rent a house in the hills, you wont be disappointed. You’ll encounter a wide variety of birds without much effort. Even on the beach, where humming birds are commonplace. Neighborhoods and Communities in Olón
Apartments and Condos: These are not very popular here, most of the housing is low-rise, only one or two storeys.
Independent Homes: The nicest areas in Olón are in the hills across the Ruta Del Sol from the downtown area, and along the beach to the south of the Malecón. The beachfront homes are set back far from the water, and have large yards.
Gated Communities: An upcoming development is the gated community of Valle de Olón which is about 1 km north of downtown Olón. It has sold about 30% of the houses, and has both empty lots and several different models available. When this project is completed, there will be communal pool, sports and game areas, lakes, hiking trails, parks and more. Some of these exist already.
