Playa Montañita

The town of Montañita a popular surf and back-packer destination because it has some of the most consistent surf in the country. Host to numerous surf championships, Montañita has become one of the hottest traveler destinations in Ecuador. It gets travelers from all over the world, just listen to the voices on the street.

The streets are bustling and vibrant. You can enjoy the great surf and international party atmosphere in this popular resort.  With a bit of luck, you can score more than a few waves!

There’s no getting away from it. The town is a noisy place, with each restaurant or bar trying to drown out the next with its music. If you’re looking for peace and tranquility, don’t stay in Montañita, or at least don’t try to sleep there.

For more peace and quiet, rent a room or a whole house in the hills, away from downtown Montañita, or better, in one of the neighboring towns such as Olón or Manglaralto, which are only minutes away by bus or taxi, because even in the hills you can hear the music blaring all night long.

If you do want to stay local, Montañita is packed with hotels and hostals at any price range. Despite the backpacker reputation, there are several high-end hotels lining the beach and tucked-away in the foothills. If you’re on a really low budget you can find a bed in a dormitory for $5-10 per night, or if you’re with a group, four to a room works out pretty cheap.

Surfing and partying are the two main attractions in Montañita, and you’ll get lots of both. In April there is annual international surf championship which goes on for about a week.
