Puerto Lopez attracts a lot of visitors year round, as it is a gateway to Machalilla National Park. From Puerto Lopez you can tour the park, hire a boat to take you whale watching, or go on dive tours to Isla de Plata and Salango. Accommodation around the town is plentiful, and the environment is lush.
A well protected crescent shaped bay, makes for calm waters with light winds, providing great swimming and snorkeling for youngsters. Surfing for beginners is available on the point, and a few hostels have boards for rent. Loads of sea food restaurants line the Malecón.
If you are driving to Puerto Lopez from the south, stop at the restaurant on the hill just before the town for an amazing view of the bay.
Puerto Lopez prides itself on being Eco-friendly, some say it is the Ecotourism capital of Ecuador or at least Manabi province. You will find many hotels use organic materials and maintain beautiful grounds.

Does anyone know where is a good deal for 4 hrs of fishing on a big boat. 4 persons in Nov 25th or there abouts.
We did not want to pay Gringo pricing.
Thx
Rick
This website is awesome, so much great information.
I’m wanting to plan a trip to Machaililla National Park with a friend. I’ll be traveling from Quito. Would you recommend going straight to Puerto Lopez and staying there? Is the National Park easy to get to by taxi/foot from most hotels there? If you know the average price of a taxi ride from Puerto Lopez to the park that’d be great, budget traveler here. Thank you!
Howdy! This article couldn’t be written any better!
Looking at this post reminds me of my previous roommate! He continually kept preaching about this.
I’ll send this article to him. Pretty sure he will have a very good read.
Thank you for sharing!
I don’t want be waves i want to fish from the shore. Would this be a good place for fishing and walking the beach? Are there houses and condos for sale in this area?
Sincerely,
Al Coburn
Alan, there is a new pier in Puerto Lopez extending several hundred feet into the water; I didn’t see it mentioned on this page. Solango, Puerto Lopez and Machalilla are major fishing cities and I have seen people [pole] fishing in Puerto Lopez. I don’t know how successful they are.
Thanks for the new information Scott.
“Playa Puerto Lopez | Puerto Lopez Beach” was indeed a really nice blog,
