Canoa boasts 17 km of beach, making it the longest beach in Ecuador. Very little of it is populated, except near the small town of Canoa which is a small undeveloped fishing village. From the main part of the beach it stretches south almost all the way to Bahia de Caraquez.
Despite the smallness of the town, people come here for surf, relaxation and some partying. In that respect it is quite similar to Montañita, except is is much smaller and not as developed. In fact the town is all dirt roads. While it is nowhere near as wild as Montañita it has the same relaxed hippie vibe.
The surf conditions are moderate, so it is suitable for beginners ans experienced surfers alike. You can renting a board and rash guard for $10-20 per day from several shops and hostals.
At weekends, the beach in front of the town does get its fair share of visitors, but there is plenty of beach, so it is not overwhelming. However, it suffers a bit from littering as well as garbage washed up by the ocean. Try not to add to it. Actually, you can do better than that. Collect a big bag of it, and Hotel Bambu will reward you with a free drink.
The majority of the hostals and private housing is concentrated around the small town. Most of it is pretty rustic and accordingly cheap. However, recently a few more upmarket hotels have opened, and they are located along the Ruta del Spondylus or 5-10 mins south on the beach in the area known as Sector El Recreo. There are also a few high-end beachfront homes around there and in the hills.
From the bluffs at the north end of Canoa Beach you can enjoy spectacular views of the ocean and coastline, and soak up amazing sunsets.
