Ayampe beach is a beautiful spot which has great surf conditions with a spectacular backdrop of Los Ahorcados islet. From the hills overlooking the beach you can enjoy fabulous ocean views and picture postcard sunsets.

The beach is right on the edge of lush tropical forest. Other than swimming and surfing there is lots to do. From bird watching along the Ayampe river, to horse riding, hiking and mountain bike riding. The biodiversity is astonishing.

Well located between the surf mecca of Montañita, and the tour mecca of Puerto Lopez, Ayampe attracts visitors who want access to activities, but also appreciate tranquility. There are a number of eco-lodges, surf hotels and spas in the Ayampe hills as well in front of Ayampe beach.

Bird watching: The Ayampe river is a sanctuary for a wide range of marine and freshwater birds. At its estuary you will find mangroves and all types of birds including hundreds of pelicans, frigates and herons. If you go hiking up the river, don’t forget mosquito repellent. Keep moving!

Hiking: There are short and long hiking and bike trails all over the place. Tracking up the river you’ll find small pools you can soak in to cool off.

Eating: There are a few restaurants and kiosks on the beach and along the 500 meter dirt road from the Ruta del Spondylus down to Ayampe beach. After a hard day surfing, check out the “Surf Restaurant” right on the beach, for a chill atmosphere and groovy tunes.

Hostels :Two or three hostels are located right on the beach, and there are several nearby right along the Ruta del Spondylus, or nestled a bit deeper in the forest. These are at higher elevation, and offer great ocean views.
