Though not as developed as Salinas in Santa Elena, General Villamil Beach (a.k.a Playas) receives a great deal of tourism because of its proximity to Guayaquil. Being only 96 km away, General Villamil Beach is the closest beach resort for quick getaway. In the winter months when Guayaquil is blazing hot, the beach is packed with local Ecuadorians.
Luckily it is an enormous beach, stretching 14 km, so it never seems crowded, on the beach at least. Best of all, its almost always sunny. In fact Playas claims to have 320 sunny days per year and was allegedly designated the 2nd best climate in the world by UNESCO.
The crescent-shaped beach is fabulous for sunbathing and swimming, and there are loads of seafood restaurants along the Malecón, and in town. You can expect the usual array of hawkers trawling the beaches with everything from ice cream to empanadas and beer. There are lots of hotels and hostels available at very reasonable rates.
Near the town, the entrance to beach is pretty untidy, smelly and busy, but farther round to the south, it is more tranquil. As you follow the road south around the perimeter of the beach, you will find a variety of condominiums, gated communities and private homes. In general, the beach front properties get progressively more upmarket the further south you go. Every few blocks along the road, there are dirt lanes between the houses, that take you down to the beach.
There are a lot of Surf spots in the area. Approx 13 km away is Engabao, the best known spot, offering three separate breaks. And there are many others which are not mentioned in most surf websites, which are much closer to the beach. Just walk north from the jetty in front of the three hotels and you will find several breaks. During July thru December when there are big south west swells there is also surfing at several points inside the bay.

Ecuador y sus playas hermosas.- Arrepentida millón veces de no escoger lo nuestro, nuestras playas, no saber admirar lo que nuestro País tiene. Escogí hace un mes como sitio para vacacionar, Mancora, ubicada en Perú… QUE ARREPENTIDA… no tiene nada que ofrecer, es sucio, es un lugar asqueroso… sus playas, digo… qué playas.. . no hay playas… todo es rocoso, amontonado… ME QUEDO DEFINITIVAMENTE CON MI ECUADOR DEL ALMA… hasta las playas de Miami son menos que las playas de mi país…. su infraestructura, sus platos típicos.. el climaaaa… I love Ecuador.
Si vas a publicar este tipo de comentarios, preferible no hacerlo. Parece ser que no conoces las bondades de Playas, ya que tanto su clima, tranquilidad y comida son de las mejores de muchos paises que cuentan con playas, desafortunadamente las malas administraciones no le han permitido tener una mejor infraestuctura turistica, la misma que en los ultimos años ha empezado a desarrollarse, debido a que al momento existen cerca de una centena de proyectos inmobiliarios que haran de este canton uno d los mas importantes del Ecuador, …aqui encuentras las mejores playas del Ecuador
Buen día, en mi afan por realizar productos publicitarios relacionados con espacios inmobiliarios en playas, me he topado con esta página que la verdad me hace sentir triste ya que en lugar de promocionar este citio turistico: Playas General Villamil, lo desprecian mencionando que su netrada en desordenad y MALOLIENTE que clase de publicidad es esa ECUADOR BEACHES? que clase de nombre es ese?. en todo caso gracias por la referencia.
