If you are short of time, and not taking a live-aboard cruise, San Cristobal is a good choice. The Island has enough activities, places of interest and nearby dive sites to keep you busy for at least 10 days, without spending much time on boats. But most accommodation is modest, with few luxury hotels.
Spectacular attractions such as Kicker Rock and Isla Lobos are very close, and the island has the most beaches of all the islands. For surfers, this also is the place to be, with two great breaks just minutes from Puerto Baquerizo, and more surf spots than on any other island.
San Cristobal is the only island with a natural freshwater supply, which comes from El Junco a lake formed in an extinct crater. On your way to El Junco, you can see a small wind farm which began operation in 2008. San Cristobal generates about 30-40% of its energy needs from wind power.
