Much like Atacames, Tonsupa which lies north of the river estuary, features a long broad beach lined with apartment building and hotels. Many of the hotels are quite large and luxurious with pools, pars and restaurants. They are more targeted toward families and foreign tourists, than party-goers.

Playa Tonsupa is a little quieter and less crowded than Atacames, but there is still an active night life. You will find several high-end restaurants and cocktail bars with sunset views along the Malecón.

From July to September, whale-watching is a popular activity. the whales come so close to the beach you can see them with binoculars from high-rise buildings. Or you can take a whale-watching tour and be there among the whales in just 10-15 minutes.

A variety of water sports are available including jet skis, and banana rides, some sponsored by the resort hotels, others by independent vendors on the beach. At the north end of the beach, near the headland, there is also good snorkeling and diving, and the waters are pretty clear on a calm day. Beautiful sunsets are abundant, with magnificent pink and orange skies.

Luxury Hotels: Tonsupa has lots of excellent hotels with big pool decks and organized water sports and whale watching tours. This is where you’ll find the best restaurants too.

Whale watching: You can take whale watching tours from the beach or from one of the hotels during July thru September. The whales are so close to the shoreline, they can be seen breaching from the hotels, and can be reached in just a few minutes by boat.
